Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a specialized form of physiotherapy that focuses on the pelvic region. It aims to assess, treat, and rehabilitate various conditions related to the pelvic floor muscles, which are vital in supporting the organs within the pelvis, including the bladder, uterus, and rectum.

Pelvic floor physio may be helpful for urinary or bowel incontinence, uterus or bladder prolapse, pelvic pain, vaginal pain, painful intercourse, pregnancy and postpartum care, and more. There is a common misconception that pelvic floor issues are always due to weakness, but they may also be due to overly tight muscles or significant imbalances between different muscle groups. Pelvic floor muscles can become weakened, tense, or dysfunctional due to a variety of factors, including pregnancy, childbirth, chronic constipation, aging, and surgery. A proper assessment along with appropriate and targeted treatment is profoundly important for successful treatment.

During a pelvic floor physiotherapy session, a trained physiotherapist will perform a detailed assessment of the pelvic floor muscles and surrounding structures. This may involve various techniques, such as internal and external examinations, biofeedback, and functional movement analysis. Based on the evaluation, a personalized treatment plan will be developed to address the specific needs of the patient.

Treatment typically includes a combination of therapeutic exercises, manual techniques, education, and lifestyle modifications. Exercises aim to strengthen weak pelvic floor muscles or release excessive muscle tension, while manual techniques may include soft tissue mobilization, myofascial release, and trigger point therapy. Education is an essential component, as it helps patients understand their condition, learn proper pelvic floor muscle control, and adopt healthy habits.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy can be highly effective in improving symptoms and restoring optimal function in individuals with pelvic floor muscle dysfunction. It is an evidence-based approach that empowers patients to actively participate in their own care. By addressing the underlying causes of pelvic floor dysfunction, it not only provides symptom relief but also contributes to long-term pelvic health and overall well-being.

This is done by administering high doses of vitamins, minerals, or other treatments directly into the bloodstream. By bypassing the digestive system we can administer higher doses than the body would otherwise be able to absorb. Injection therapies are similar, but smaller dose, and administered as an intramuscular injection rather than into the blood. General wellness vitamin therapies are available as well as targeted treatment approaches to support specific body systems or tissues. During your first consult with a naturopathic physician we will determine a protocol that is right for you.

TRE® (Tension, Stress & Trauma Release Exercise) was created by Dr. David Berceli. TRE® is a series of body-based somatic exercises that work as a powerful resilience building and healing tool that effectively assists the body in releasing deep muscular patterns of stress, tension, and trauma. TRE® is designed to be a self-empowering technique by using a series of simple yet innovative exercises to safely re-activate the body’s natural shaking/vibrating/tremoring mechanism.

TRE® is a safe and effective technique for most people that supports the release of stored or accumulated stress and unresolved tension and/or trauma from the body’s muscles and tissue, calming down the nervous system and thus restoring the body to natural balance. It can be used to support the release of emotions ranging from mild upset to severe anxiety. As this shaking mechanism in the muscles is part of a natural behavior as humans, everyone can benefit from TRE®. Individual experiences with TRE® vary, with clients reporting feeling energized and/or very calm following a TRE® session.

Taught in a safe and regulated environment with a provider guiding you, TRE® is designed to be a self-empowering technique that you can do on your own when you feel ready, though many continue to choose to do the sessions one on one or in groups to have the support of your provider. TRE®’s nervous system regulation occurs with no physical touch from the provider and can take place either in person or online over video.

The TRE® process should not be used as a substitute for trauma recovery procedures of a medical or psychiatric/psychological nature. Individuals who have physical or psychological conditions that require strict regulation, individuals with fragile psychological defenses, a complex history of trauma or restricting physical or medical limitations should consult their medical practitioner or a Certified TRE® Provider prior to performing these exercises.

Reported Benefits Include:
Reduced muscle tension and pain
Regulate and restore the nervous system
Less worry & anxiety
Deep body relaxation
Can be performed almost anywhere
Reduces symptoms of PTSI (Post Traumatic Stress Injury) / PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)
More energy, endurance, and vitality
Less workplace stress
Better sleep
Better relationships
Increased flexibility
Greater emotional resiliency and self-control
Decreases symptoms of vicarious trauma (a stress reaction to being exposed to someone else's trauma story or being exposed to the details of the traumatic event.)
Healing of old injuries
Relief from Chronic Medical Conditions

Arjuna offers a sliding scale for single sessions for those in need.

Coaching

Mind-body coaching at Madrona helps clients to prioritize and focus on the aspects of life that support their overall wellness, shift unwanted mindsets and narratives that support them in creating a purpose-driven life.

Blood Draws

We offer blood draws for Life Labs, Invitae (for pregnant patients) and other labs.

Mark comes to Madrona with over 20 years of experience in private practice as a counsellor, therapist, facilitator, and teacher. His practice is based deeply in Psychosynthesis, a form of transpersonal psychology, and in Social Ecology with a focus in Ecopsychology. Mark’s approach honours how personal insight and knowing, gained through life experiences, can ultimately bring clients into more ease with themselves and how they relate to the world around them. This reflects Gregory Bateson’s observation that so many problems “are the result of the difference between how nature works and the way people think”. Addressing this difference can be hugely liberating, deeply relieving - and ultimately wonder-full. Nature does not have an opinion about the way things are, it flows with what is. Mark helps his clients discover that, like nature, they hold an innate wisdom to shape the flow of their lives, as a tree grows towards the light.

With a background in conservation, communications, and theatre – where he developed a love of improv as a tool to build self-confidence, as well as training to facilitate Joanna Macy’s The Work that Reconnects, Mark is as passionate about social change as he is about personal change, and sees that they go hand-in-hand. Mark supports his clients in learning how to live fully, especially in the face of the challenging times, both personally and globally.

Mark offers a broad-based general practice for adults both individually and in groups, in person and online, and often finds himself in support of counsellors, therapists, and folks who hold space for others.

He has experience working with: life transitions; issues relating to uncertainty and lack of purpose; crises of ageing, death and dying; the psycho-spiritual distress and trauma of living in times of great division, the apparent “unravelling” and change of climate and social systems we believed we could rely upon and trust; and more.

Just as physical illness occurs when our natural processes of healing are interrupted, so with psycho-emotional disturbance. When emotional well-being is compromised, it tends to be our sense of our identity, purpose and value that is challenged, although this may also spill over into our physical reality. I work with my clients to align with their own processes to recover their sense of themselves, their purpose, and the aliveness that informs us all.

Though born in the UK, Mark lived for four decades in Aotearoa/New Zealand, where he was a founder of one of the first transition towns in Australasia, leading efforts to empower local communities to create solutions around eco-social challenges. In addition to his practice, Mark was course facilitator at Psychosynthesis Institute of New Zealand for 12 years. He relocated with his Canadian partner to Salt Spring in 2020.

From Mark: ‘Uy‛ skweyul. This Hul’qumi’num greeting recognises the traditional caretakers of these lands, and my gratitude to have felt welcomed here, both by people and place.
